Study after study shows that whatever you want to call the protocol – intermittent fasting, fasting, alternate day fasting, or alternate day caloric restriction – it works very well for weight loss. A few recent ones: So, yes: it works. But does fasting work solely through caloric restriction, or is it doing something special? That’s the real question. There’s no question that fasting causes weight loss through caloric restriction. Obviously, when you don’t eat anything, your body turns to its own stored energy reserves, reserves that take up physical space and have mass. To dig a bit deeper, let’s look at how weight loss occurs during a fast. I’ll stick to research involving humans only (sorry, rodent personal trainers). Secretion of growth hormone, one of the premier fat burning hormones, increases during a fast. In a five- day fasting protocol, men experienced increased GH secretion on day one and day five (the only two days where GH was measured). A later study showed that during two- day fasting sessions, growth hormone secretions increased in both frequency and intensity in men. They experienced more frequent GH bursts and each burst secreted a higher mass of GH. A more recent study found that 2. GH by 1. 30. 0% in women and almost 2. Fasting decreases fasting insulin levels. The presence of insulin inhibits lipolysis, the release of stored triglycerides (body fat). Without lipolysis actually releasing stored body fat, it’s rather difficult to, well, burn that body fat for energy. During a fast, fasting insulin decreases and lipolysis increases. This insulin- blunting aspect of fasting quite literally allows the fast to be successful, because without the ability to access stored body fat for energy, making it through a period of zero caloric intake will be nigh impossible. Fasting improves insulin sensitivity. Fasting increases the catecholamines, both adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine). Both catecholamines increase resting energy expenditure during a fast, and guess where your fasting body finds the energy to expend? From body fat. Catecholamines activate hormone sensitive lipase present in adipose tissue, spurring the release of said fat. This makes intuitive sense, doesn’t it? If you’re hungry in the wild, you need to hunt (or gather, or fish, or somehow procure food) and you need energy to do it. The catecholamines help provide some of that energy while burning fat in the process. Hmm, notice anything? All those mechanisms dealt with fat burning specifically. While there may be some weirdo out there who’s interested in reducing bone mineral density and muscle mass while maintaining fat tissue, I would wager that what most people mean by “weight loss” is “fat mass loss.” From the stuff I just linked, it looks like fasting burns fat, rather than just weight. But what about Conventional Wisdom which claims that fasting increases muscle wasting – maybe because your body will totally recognize the lethal nature of all that arterycloggingsaturated animal fat and choose to break down muscle instead? Is it true? Let’s go to the research: In one study, normal weight subjects ate just once a day without reducing overall caloric intake. Weight didn’t change, which isn’t really surprising, but body composition did change – and for the better. Body fat decreased and lean weight increased (in addition to a bunch of other beneficial changes) without an overall reduction in calories. A recent review of the relevant literature found that while fasting and caloric restriction are “equally as effective in decreasing body weight and fat mass,” fasting is “more effective for the retention of lean mass.”Conventional Wisdom strikes out again. In closing. It decreases caloric intake. In order to lose weight, you need a caloric deficit. That really isn’t in contention here, folks. It increases fat oxidation while sparing lean mass. Since what we’re trying to do is lose fat (rather than just “weight”), the fact that fasting increases hormones that preferentially burn fat and decreases hormones that inhibit fat burning is extremely desirable. It improves adherence. In most of the studies surveyed, participants found fasting to be an extremely tolerable way to diet, especially when compared to outright caloric restriction. Even AB, the fasting Scotsman, reported very little difficulty throughout his 3. If fasting is easier for you than trying to laboriously count calories, fasting is going to be the more effective weight – er, fat – loss method. All in all, fasting is an effective way to lose body fat. It’s not the only way, and it isn’t “required” for Primal weight loss, but many in the community have found it to be very helpful and the literature backs them up. All you have to do is make it to the gym, crank out reps until you get a sick pump, head home and get on with the rest of your day, right? You’ll be faced with bright shiny labels and ever outrageous claims of anabolic potency and promises of 6 pack abs. How do you know which supplements are worth your hard earned cash and which ones are just marketing gimmicks? Well the short answer is research. And, luckily for you, I’ve done that part for you already. Once you know which ingredients you are looking for you can cut those myriad products down to the least common denominator and decide for yourself what’s worth it and what’s not. In this article I’ve narrowed down some staple bodybuilding supplements – not including protein* – which have earned their place in your supplement cupboard. And best of all, most of the supps I describe below are available in bulk for a fraction of the cost of many expensive proprietary blends.*I covered specific protein supplements in an earlier article, What Protein Should I Get? Creatine. A fitting start, creatine is one of the most well researched products on the market and has stood the test of time. Like the jacked bald old timer who’s always in the gym during your session, it simply works. Creatine phosphate stores in muscle are essential for contraction. Ingesting it increases muscle strength by saturating these stores which allows for more intense workouts, which in turn equate to better gains. There are also some hormonal benefits from creatine use, such as increased levels of DHT (the more potent brother of testosterone), but this is a relatively minor mechanism in its function. I find that creatine is best used during bulking cycles, but there is no reason why it should not be used during cutting as well. The effects become noticeable after about 2 weeks of use, 5g per day being sufficient to achieve muscle saturation. ![]() ![]() ![]() The old school idea of “loading” is completely unnecessary. Creatine is available in numerous new forms and delivery systems, but creatine monohydrate is by far the most studied. A good quality micronized creatine monohydrate should be tried first, and if results are inadequate or side effects intolerable then you can move on to these newer forms. Just make sure you drink plenty of water, unless you want to experience some painful and uncomfortable cramping. And don’t mix it with acidic juice either. ![]() A small side note to consider – if you ever need to complete a routine blood test, always let your doctor know about using creatine. Creatinine, a waste by product of creatine, is used as a measure of kidney function because it correlates closely to the kidneys filtration rate. If given an overabundance of creatine, especially in muscular individuals, this level can rise above normal. I’ve heard of a few clinicians scratching their heads in confusion as to why their seemingly healthy young patient is suffering from kidney failure. BCAAs. The branch chained amino acids are composed of leucine, isoleucine and valine. Leucine in particular has been shown to increase the rate of protein synthesis in skeletal muscle. In fact it is so potent at this that we have to exclude its use from our experiments in fear that it will skew the results. In the past BCAAs have been touted as a way of improving endurance and fighting catabolism (muscle breakdown). However there is sufficient evidence to show that leucine in particular has potent effects as a muscle builder as well. Bodybuilding is the use of progressive resistance exercise to control and develop one's musculature. An individual who engages in this activity is referred to as a.Taking leucine on its own is not a particularly good idea as it will lead to deficiency of the other two amino acids. It can however be combined into protein shakes (“spiked” with leucine so to speak). When it comes to things that interact with my brain cells, I like to stick to the well known. Aside from ephedrine (which has been banned from sports supplements) caffeine is another useful and underestimated supplement and its one that can achieve significant results. It’s been proven relatively safe and has been used in numerous trials. Tolerance is the major drawback, but of course this is true for all stimulants. Beta- Alanine. If you are involved in any sport that benefits from improved endurance (i. Beta alanine combines with l- histidine to form carnosine, an intracellular buffer concentrated highly in muscle cells. It counteracts the actions of lactic acid in strenuous exercise to prevent p. H decline. Beta alanine has been shown to be beneficial in cycling and boxing sports, in one study increasing punching power by about 2. Beta alanine should be taken in divided doses as it can cause paraesthesia or nerve pain that manifests as tingling over the entire body. Like an over- affectionate uncle offering to help iron your underwear, this is completely harmless, but can be disconcerning if you’re not expecting it. As beta alanine acts as a weak neurotransmitter, it is best taken before workouts, when the mild stimulatory effect can be unleashed on some iron. There has been some controversy regarding taking multivitamins and exactly how much benefit, if any, these provide. In my opinion, the most important thing to keep in mind is that your micronutrients should be coming predominantly from a well balanced diet, not supplements. However I have found some to be useful: B vitamins These can improve memory and cognition so a multi which has plenty of these (they are water soluble so we pass excess in the urine) can be beneficial. B vitamins will support healthy energy metabolism as well as helping to keep you mentally sharp and focused. I prefer soluble tablets as they have better absorption. Zinc Zinc is a component of many enzymes in the body and plays a part in tissue healing and testosterone production. Since testosterone is produced during sleep, it is best taken before bed, in quantities ranging from 1. Vitamin C This vitamin has long been touted as a cure for the common cold and a general immune system stimulant, but the evidence is not convincing. Unless perhaps the idea of shooting up a IV dose every day appeals to you. However, not all is lost because vitamin c has been shown to be effective at reducing the levels of cortisol in our bodies. A stress hormone, cortisol promotes degredation and breakdown of muscle. In a nutshell it is bad for our purposes. The Prof’s Example Protocol. The following is an example supplement protocol which I have designed that should stand you in good stead: Morning. Multivitamin rich in B- complex vitamins. Pre Workout. 2- 3g beta alanine (still take on non- workout days) Post Workout. BCAAs or pure leucine. Pre Bed. Casein based meal or shake. C (preferably modified release)Remember to keep your expectations realistic. This stack will help support solid progressive gains that are easy to maintain. Today, this represents the most conservative and most predictable long- term option. Traditional dentistry most often replaces the missing single tooth with a fixed bridge. This is accomplished by grinding away sound tooth structure, and crowning (capping) two or more teeth on each side of the missing tooth and joins them together with the artificial or dummy tooth. This approach increases the risk of decay of the crowned teeth, increases the risk of root canal therapy, and makes oral hygiene difficult to impossible, which in turn increases bacterial plaque retention (the cause of decay and gum disease). Today's technology can replace the tooth with a dental implant, which may replace a single tooth or a whole mouth of teeth, without crowning any teeth. One of the major benefits is that the remaining teeth are easier to clean and less likely to decay, and/or need root canal therapy. The average dental implant has a better long- term survival rate than the average bridge. The average bridge gets replaced every 8 to 1. Consequences of Tooth Loss. Effect on the Jaw Bone. The bone in the body acts very similar to a muscle. When muscles are exercised, they grow strong and larger. When bone is exercised or stimulated, it also becomes stronger. For example, when an arm is broken and placed in a cast for six weeks, you can see the arm is smaller after this time frame, since the muscles have started to shrink or atrophy. In addition, if you evaluate the bone protected by the cast, it also becomes less dense and weaker in this period. Similarly, the bone of the jaw can only be stimulated by a tooth or by an implant. The connections between a tooth, or an implant, create and preserve the size and shape of the bone. Bone needs the stimulation of the tooth roots to maintain its form, density, and strength. Scientific studies have proven that the normal chewing forces that are transmitted from the teeth to the bone of the jaw are what preserves the bone and keeps it strong. In this photo, it is easy to see how the ridge has collapsed. The tooth was removed and, without stimulation or grafting, the bone and gum have disappeared. This close relationship between the tooth and the bone continues throughout life. When a tooth is lost, the lack of stimulation to the surrounding bone results in a decrease in the density and dimensions of the bone. This means that there is a loss of width and height of the bone. In a 2. 5- year study of patients with no teeth, x- rays demonstrated continued bone loss of the jaws during this entire time span. Therefore, a tooth is necessary both to the development of the bone around the tooth, and is also necessary for the stimulation of this bone to maintain its strength, density and shape. The loss of all of the teeth slowly, but eventually, leads to jaws with almost complete bone loss. A lower jaw, which starts out two inches in height, can be reduced to less than one- quarter of an inch by atrophy over time. That is one reason why modern dentistry is so excited about using dental implants to replace missing teeth. Patients wearing dentures dont realize they are losing bone. Over time, the poor fit and function of the denture is often thought to be due to its age, weight loss by the patient, or wear of the dentures teeth. The rate and amount of bone loss may be influenced by gender (females lose more bone), hormones (lack of estrogen causes more bone loss), metabolism, medications, parafunction (grinding the teeth) and poorly fitting dentures. Consider the following: The issue of bone loss after tooth loss has been ignored in the past by traditional dentistry. This is so because dentistry had no treatment to stop or prevent the process of bone loss and its consequences. As a result, doctors had to ignore the inevitable bone loss after tooth extraction. Today, the profession knows about bone loss, and that implants can stop bone loss because they stimulate the bone, similar to the way the tooth did prior to its loss. Jaws with bone loss are associated with problems, which often impair the predictable results of traditional dentures. The loss of bone first results in decreased bone width. There is a 2. 5% decrease in width of bone during the first year after tooth loss and an overall . The remaining narrow bone often causes discomfort when the thin overlying gum tissues are loaded under a complete or partial denture. In the lower jaw, the continued bone loss eventually results in prominent bony projections covered by thin, movable, unattached gum tissue. As the remaining bone on the front of the jaw continues to disappear, the bony projection under the tongue rises to sit on the top of ridge. This results in pain, as the denture sits atop the sharp bony projection. In addition, there is little to prevent the denture from moving forward against the lower lip during function or speech. The problems are further compounded by the upward movement of the back of the denture during contraction of the muscles during speech and function. The resulting incline (slope) of the now deformed lower jaw compared with that of the upper jaw also creates instability and movement of the lower denture. Loss of bone in the upper and lower jaw is not limited to the bone around the teeth; portions of the skeletal bone also may be lost especially in the back parts of the lower jaw where the patient may lose more than 8. The nerves of the lower jaw which were surrounded by and protected by bone eventually become exposed and sit on the top of the ridge directly under the denture. As a result, acute pain and/or temporary to permanent loss of sensation or feeling of the areas supplied by the nerve is possible. The bone loss in the upper jaw may cause pain and an increase in upper denture movement during eating. The forces from eating with an ill- fitting denture are transferred directly to the surface only and not the internal structure of the bone since there are no roots. Therefore, these forces do not stimulate and maintain the bone, but instead actually decrease blood supply and increased the rate of the bone loss. Chewing forces generated by short facial types can be 3 or 4 times that of long facial types. These patients are at even greater risk to develop severe bone loss. Many of these conditions that have been described for patients without any teeth also exist for patients where only back teeth are missing and they are wearing a removable partial denture. The above problems focus on the damage to the bone. The remaining natural teeth are also subjected to substantial damage. The teeth must support the partial denture by connections called clasps. The clasps grab onto the teeth, and by design, transfer lateral or sideward forces to the teeth, which weaken them and cause tooth loss. Since these teeth often become compromised by loss of bone due to these forces, many partial dentures are then designed to minimize the forces applied upon these teeth. The net result is an increase in movement of the removable denture, and greater pressures on the soft gum tissue over the bone. This results in more bone loss. These conditions can protect the remaining teeth, but then accelerate the bone loss in the regions without teeth. Effect on Soft Tissue. As bone continues to lose width and height, the gum tissues gradually decrease. A very thin gum usually lies over the advanced bone loss of the lower jaw. The gum is prone to sore spots caused by the overlaying denture. In addition, unfavorable high muscle attachments and loose tissue often complicates the situation.
